On Thursday, June 12, 2014, Juan Carlos Vélez, MD Physiatrist, Medical Director at Centros de Rehabilitacion Club de Leones Cruz del Sur in Punta Arenas, Chile shared some basic concepts about the Chilean public health system, pediatric disability in Chile and how care is provided for these children along the country with special emphasis on the “Patagonia” region.
Dr. Vélez is a Rehabilitation Medicine Specialist, he has worked for more than 12 years as Medical Director at “Centros de Rehabilitación Cruz del Sur” in Punta Arenas, Chile, a non profit free of charge outpatient medical rehabilitation facility. He received his medical degree in 1996 at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia and completed residency at Universidad Militar in Bogotá, Colombia. His main interests are quality of care and medical informatics as a way to improve team communication and efficiency. He is a member of the AACPDM.
Since February of this year he moved to Santiago and he is currently working at Hospital del Trabajador, the biggest worker’s compensation hospital in Chile. This hospital has just been accredited by the Ministry of Health with a 100 % compliance and will be seeking CARF accreditation in the near future.
