What is your cleaning process for casting/splinting scissors in your clinic?
Summary of Responses (de-identified)
Facility | Scissor cleaning process |
ORG A | We wipe with oxivir between patients and let dry open. For casting debris we use goo be gone or remove to reduce but never really cleans completely. We only have specific pairs for casting. We have not had them sanitized for splinting . For those that are used with wounds there are sterile scissors that are then sent for sterilization. The casting scissors are in our casting cart so they aren’t in the main area for use. They are so gross that most know they are for casting. |
ORG B | All of our scissors are wiped with a disinfected wipe after every use. The casting scissors are then thoroughly cleaned and sharpened in sterile processing 1x per month. We have 2 groupings of 10ish scissors each. When one group is being cleaned and sharpened, the other is in rotation for use. The splinting scissors are sharpened by an outside company as they tend to get damaged by the chemicals used during the sterile processing process. |
ORG C | For all scissors, we are making sure there is an acceptable IFU with cleaning instructions – reviewed by infection control team. We were recently instructed to purchase these-available from McKesson. #1259211 |
ORG D | We use oxivar wipes to clean the scissors. |
ORG E | We clean with the hospital approved cleaners. i.e. oxivir. We have had previous discussions re: disposable scissors, but because we are not cutting skin, just casts, we use regular cleaning supplies. |
ORG F | We would clean with our sani-wipes if needed but we do not have a formal process. |
ORG G | Since we typically use scissors on plaster, we clean with soap and water. |
ORG H | We wipe down scissors with Sani cloth between use. We send for sharpening, disassembly and cleaning every 2-3 months (rotate 2 groups). |
ORG I | We wipe them down with the hospital approved disinfectant after every use. |
ORG J | Warm soapy water and then dry with a towel |
ORG K | Wipe with disinfectant wipes. We have them sharpened by the same people who do the OR scissors, this removes the casting material stuck on the scissors. |
ORG L | We use Cavi-wipes/Sani-Cloths for casting/splinting scissors |
ORG M | We use oxivir wipes to clean and let dry. |
