The IWK Pediatric Rehabilitation Service collaborates with children and youth with disabilities and their families to grow up ready, healthy, participating in life – all while preparing for adulthood!
IWK Pediatric Rehabilitation provides a vast array of services and programming for children, youth and their families. Services can range from more intensive inpatient stays to ambulatory clinic visits to community based and outreach programs. Care is provided by interdisciplinary care teams including: Augmentative Communication Service, Community Therapy Team, Infant Preschool Team, Inpatient Rehab Team, Recreation Therapy, School Therapy Team, Specialty Seating, Rehab Ambulatory Clinics, Psychology, and Autism Preschool Diagnostic and Intervention Services.
In 2015, the newly renovated IWK Kids’ Rehabilitation Centre opened. The centre, which was completely donor funded, helps to facilitate patients and families in achieving their goals related to the ‘F-words’ in childhood disability (Rosenbaum & Gorter, 2012) which are: family, friends, fitness, function, fun and future. The new space allows for families to work on their identified goals, with support from their complete inter-professional rehab team(s). In 2017, Dr. Jordan Sheriko, Pediatric Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Specialist, joined the team.
Being part of the IPRC network has allowed staff to access innovative resources and make connections with other rehab providers internationally. IWK staff have most enjoyed the webinars and learning about current and innovative rehab practices.
